After the first couple of days of stroke play competition, England’s very own Tracey Williamson (Sheringham, Norfolk) finished top of the leaderboard with an overall score of -2 across 36 holes. She was one of just two players in the 120-player field to finish under par, with England teammate Kerry Smith (Waterlooville, Hampshire) just three shots back in tied-4th.
Sally Shayler (Bedfordshire) was tied-10th, Helen Lowe (Scraptoft, Leicestershire) was tied-20th, Caroline Berry (Bromborough, Cheshire) finished tied-24th and Jackie Foster (Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire) was tied-29th.
England’s impressive showing saw them take on Belgium in the quarter-finals on Thursday as they won 4-1 overall. They didn’t lose a single one of their five matches (three wins, two halves) to set up a semi-final against Switzerland.
Sadly the Swiss came out on top 3-2 on Friday, with Jackie Foster’s match with Evelyn Orley needing 20 holes to determine a winner, as the Swiss edged the contest.
Saturday saw the women beat Germany 3-2, with three matches going right to the death, to help England pick up the bronze medal. Click here to see the results.
England Senior Women's Captain Angela Jones said: "The team played great golf all week, qualifying in 1st place and beating both Belgium and Germany who had beaten us last year. It was a true team effort, we are all delighted with our bronze medals and also that all the women's and girls' teams have medalled in the Europeans this year."
Meanwhile, England Senior Men finished tied-7th at the European Senior Men’s Team Championship in Bulgaria.
Despite a very strong showing in the stroke play stages, as the team topped the leaderboard overall by two shots ahead of 2nd-placed Ireland and an enormous 16 shots ahead of 3rd-placed Spain, they were defeated 4-1 by Denmark in the quarter-finals.
A 3-2 defeat to Germany was followed by a 2.5-2.5 draw with Scotland on Saturday’s final day, leaving them for a share of 7th place.
