English Women’s County Finals were played between 20th-22nd September at Stover Golf Club, Newton Abbot, Devon by the winners of the six regional county match days, Buckinghamshire, Dorset, Nottinghamshire, Lancashire, Norfolk, & Surrey
County Captain Jo Herd had to make adjustments to her team from the regional round due to work commitments, holidays and Tracey Williamson playing for England at the Senior Home Internationals. Susan Henderson and Immy Leeder were called up and Sharon Black the travelling reserve was played.
Day one started with a strong Surrey team which included two English internationals. Harriet Allsebrook and Tiffany Mills got off to a fast start with singles wins but the team lost 3/2. The afternoon saw the team play Buckinghamshire, last year’s winners and again the result was a 3/2 loss.
Saturday morning started with a brilliant 3/2 win against Lancashire. Young Amelie Marling and Jo Herd got the first point with a 4/3 win and that was quickly followed by two singles wins from Harriet Allsebrook and Tiffany Mills. Given Lancashire have over 100 golf clubs, it really was a great achievement for Norfolk.
Saturday afternoon saw a 3/2 loss to Nottinghamshire- the eventual winners. They had a strong team however it was only a narrow defeat for Norfolk
The final days play was delayed due to heavy rain. Harriet Allsebrook and Tiffany Mills once again secured wins in their singles matches. Sharon Black put up a good fight but five birdies from her opponent showed the standard of golf! The two foursomes matches were left on the course both all square with three to play. Sharon Allen and Susan Henderson provided a magical moment on the 17th, when Henderson chipped in for birdie. This set them up for a brilliant half against the Dorset pair that had been undefeated all week. The final match saw Amelie Marling and Jo Herd make a great up and down on 17 to go one up heading to the 18th tee. Hitting the fairway and green set them up for a 2 up win and a 3.5-1.5 win. This also secured the third-place finish for Norfolk.
County Captain Jo Herd said “I am so proud of what the team have delivered. As one of the smallest teams, every player stepped up to show the amazing team spirit our County has. Special mention to Harriet Allsebrook and Tiffany Mills with 5 from 5 wins. Finally, and importantly, I would like to thank all those who travelled with us”.
